Phoenix Trophy Hockey Tournament, Tanga Tanzania

7th -9th July 2006

 

 The Phoenix Trophy 2006 is a prestigious Hockey tournament held annually in Tanga, Tanzania. The year the 6th editionf of the Phoenix Trophy Hockey Tournament is being held from the 7th to the 9th July. The venue for all the matches will be the Popatlal Secondary School Grounds (Grass Fields).

 The following are the teams that have confirmed their participation in this tournament so far.

 

  • MWITA X1           - Mombasa, Kenya  
  • SIMBA UNION      - Nairobi, Kenya
  • EL-HILAL             - Tanga, Tanzania  
  • ANADIL BURHANI - Tanga, Tanzania
  • T.P.D.F                - Dar-Es-Salaaam, Tanzania
  • D.I.                     - Dar-Es-Salaam, Tanzania
  • ZANZIBAR           - Zanzibar, Tanzania
  • ARUSHA TWIGAS  - Arusha, Tanzania
  • MOSHI KHALSA     - Moshi, Tanzania
  •  Also note after a decade,  there will be ladies tournament along with the gents, ladies teams confirmed are:-

  • MOMBASA SPORTS CLUB  - Mombasa, Kenya
  • RAMBLERS                     - Nairobi, Kenya
  • TANZANIA X1                  - Tanzania
  •   That makes the current participation in this years tournament 9 Men’s Teams & 3 Lady’s teams.

     

     

     

    Phoenix Cup 2006 Results:

      Round Robbing Results

  • D.I   v/s   Simba Union : 2 – 3
  • T.P.D.F v/s Annadil Burhani : 2 – 3
  • Arusha Twigas v/s El-Hilal : 0 – 1
  • D.I  v/s Moshi Khalsa : 1 – 2
  • Mombasa Mwita v/s Annadil Burhani : 0 -1
  • Arusha Twigas v/s Zanzibar : 2 – 0
  • Simba Union v/s Moshi Khalsa : 2 – 0
  • Mombasa Mwita v/s T.P.D.F : 0 – 2
  • Zanzibar v/s El – Hilal : 0 – 1
  •    Semi Finals:

    Both Tanga teams clashed in the Semi-Finals with the game ending in a draw after extra time. Onto penalties and even here both teams were deadlocked in the first round of 5 penalties taken. Eventually Annadil Burhani edged out El-Hilal by a penalty score of 7-5.

    In the other Semi-Final Simba Union or Nairobi, Kenya beat T.P.D.F  by 2 – 1 in regular play.

        Finals:

     The prospect of home team Annadil Burhani facing Simba Union of Kenya in the finals made for an exciting final. A large crowd was on hand to witness the finals that was played at breakneck speed with some amazing field hockey skills display. Simba Union of Nairobi, Kenya emerged as winners after a 3 – 0 score line.

     Individual awards went to players of both teams along with Runner-Up trophy to Annadil Burhani and the Champions trophy to Simba Union.

      Other Awards included:

    Best Upcoming Forward – Premal Kara of El-Hilal, Tanga

    Best Goal Keeper – Akil Barbrawalla – Annadil Burhani, Tanga

    Best Midfielder – Inderjit Matharu Nairobi Simba Union

    Top Scorer – Kazi Ally – T.P.D.F, Dar- Es- Salaam

    Best Defender – Mustafa Juzer – Annadil Burhani, Tanga

     

      In the Ladies Division:

     In an effort to continue the development of ladies hockey in Tanzania a ladies division was also held during the phoenix cup. Mombasa Sports Club managed to beat Tanzania Ladies 1 – 0.

      Toddler Exhibition Game:

    During the half time break of the Men’s Finals a toddlers games was held to help promote field hockey amongst the youth. El- Hilal Kids faced off against Annadil Burhani Kids (5-14 Age Bracket). The game ended in a 1 – 1 tie, both teams received awards for their efforts.

     The tournament was sponsored by Phoenix Assurance Co and LAL Insurance Co. Organized by Tanga Regional Association and hosted at PopatlalSecondary School. The sponsors also held a social for all participating teams.

    The sponsors held the dinner reception party for all the teams including the officials/players ( about 220 + people) at Raskazone Swimming club, whereby the Tanzania Hockey Association showed the Hockey Dvd to all the teams. During the party, everybody were entertained through the music and all the teams were presented with the participating certificates and each team incharge were given chance to say something.

     

      In Rememberence Of A Tanzanian Hockey Icon:

      A minutes silince was also held during the tournament in honor of the recently deceased Mr Nguvumal Said. He will remain for ever an icon of Tanzanian Hockey. As a leader in the T.P.D.F Field Hockey teams over the past several years Mr Nguvumali Said also was the Vice Chairman of T.H.A. He will be sorely missed and forever remembered for all his contributions to Field Hockey in Tanzania.

      Sponsors - Mr. Ajay Verma of Phoenix Assurance of Tanzania Insurance Co and Mr. Sanjiv Lal of Lal Insurance Agency were the chief guests and awarded the various trophies to winning / runners up teams along with other outstanding players.
